Electronic whiteboards are starting to replace blackboards in the classroom. Most children embrace the whiteboard because it makes learning fun and interactive. We ask John Carr to give us ideas on how to get the most out of the whiteboard with some useful tips and tricks that you use.
Interactive Whiteboard Ideas to try
1. Importing YouTube videos into your interactive whiteboard lessons
If you want to show a YouTube video but can’t access YouTube through your school system, here is a simple way to download videos and import them into your interactive whiteboard lessons. Go to Kissyoutube (http://www.kissyoutube.com/) and follow the simple instructions. This will enable you to download any YouTube video as a Flash video (flv) file that can be easily imported into most interactive whiteboard software.
2. Transforming sentences
Write a sentence on the whiteboard so that each word is a separate moveable object. For example, write a short sentence on the whiteboard. Use different colors for the different kinds of words eg. red for nouns, blue for verbs, green for adjectives etc. Under the headings nouns, verbs, adjectives, have students brainstorm other words that might work in a sentence structure such as this. Have students replace the colored words on the whiteboard one at a time to transform the sentence with words from the lists. They construct a new sentence that makes sense. For example, Squash a red potato on the elephant.
Seasons is a theme-based interactive whiteboard lesson designed to support and extend learning from an AWARD Reading Grade 1 text: Bear Cubs. The lesson content that refers to “Amityville” can be altered by the teacher to reflect the real location of the children.
If you don't have access to either Smartboard or Promethean software, you can view this activity by downloading a free viewer. The viewer allows limited access to features but will give you a good idea of the possibilities of an AWARD lesson on an interactive whiteboard.
